2MASS Galaxies
Overview
2MASS is the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. It was an infrared survey of the entire sky that took place between 1997 and 2001. Two 1.3-meter telescopes were used, one in Arizona and the other in Chile.
2MASS produced a catalog with over 300 million objects, including minor planets, brown dwarfs, nebulae, and galaxies. The Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy, a dwarf galaxy interacting with the Milky Way’s disk, was discovered using 2MASS data in 2003.
The goal of the 2MASS redshift survey was to map out to roughly a redshift of 0.03. This is roughly equal to about 370 million light years. It fills in more of the galaxies that were formerly blocked by our own Milky Way—that band of light across the sky. The infrared bands used on 2MASS can peer through a lot of the gas and dust.
Tully Substitute?
The 2MASS and Tully data overlay one another, so which one is better? You may notice more spread in the 2MASS galaxy positions. That is, what appears to be a smearing of the large-scale structure. Around clusters of galaxies, you will also see the finger of god effect.
The Tully Galaxies have performed a scientifically informed “massaging” of the galaxy positions, so it remains the more accurate rendition of the local universe.
Fingers of God
A “finger of god” is a line of galaxies that point radially back to the Milky Way. Early in the process of mapping the local universe, astronomers noticed that galaxies, when plotted, appeared on lines that pointed radially back to Earth. It turns out these lines, dubbed fingers of god, are a cluster of galaxies spread out radially (along the line of sight) because of the local motions within the cluster contaminate the redshift measurement, which we use to compute the distance.
For example, the galaxies of the Local Group are all moving in seemingly random directions as they gravitationally interact with one another—many are blueshifted (coming toward us) even as the universe expands. These local motions within clusters contaminate the overall redshift in the spectrum, causing the distances to be less accurate, and appearing to stretch these clusters along our line of sight.
